Search Engine Ranking

Search engines use software programs called spiders to crawl through all the web sites posted on the Internet and collect information about them. Each web site is then rated on a variety of factors, such as use of HTML titles and keywords, and given a ranking. When a user employs a search engine, the pages to which the search engine provides links are organized, or ranked, by relevance to the user’s submission.

At Web noxious, it is our practice to use proven web development techniques to ensure that spiders can gather the information you need them to have. For example, we use the appropriate tags, validate our code, avoid frames, and make sure our pages load quickly. Unfortunately, these practices—although they ensure your site has a solid foundation—do not guarantee your site will appear in search engines.

To get the highest ranking possible from your site, we recommend search engine optimization (SEO). This is a separate service we can provide to help you identify the keywords, titles, and other features that would improve your ranking. If you have an existing site and your web developer did not specify that search engine optimization was included in the services provided, assume that it wasn’t—and know that if you don’t have the ranking you would like, we can help you improve it.

The Web noxious owner regularly attends national Search Engine Strategies conferences (most recently: summer 2005 conference in San Jose, CA). You can rest assured that the techniques employed by Web noxious are both spam free and cutting edge.

Overview of Search Engine Optimization Process

Before the search engine optimization, the Web noxious team goes through your web site and puts together recommendations for increasing online traffic using SEO and usability principles. We discuss your results with you and identify short- and long-term opportunities to strengthen your company’s strategic goals and increase your site’s online traffic.

At Web noxious, we use the foremost industry program to identify keywords that your target market uses at the major search engines. We then incorporate the keywords with the least competition into both the standard web page components (ex: meta tags, titles, alt image tags) and other lesser-known (but non-spam) web page locations.

Note: Many people, including numerous web professionals, do not realize one of the top search engines puts every submitted site on a “reserve list.” A site does not get included in this search engine’s active index until the search engine spider finds the submitted site link on another site. This is important to know when you want to attract online traffic from search engines.

Actual Client Results

These are the Google ranking results for actual Web noxious clients as of 11/28/2005. Please remember that the internet is continuing to grow and that ranking will fluctuate depending on the presence or absence of similar sites. We recommend that you review your search engine ranking periodically—if you don’t like your ranking, it may be time for an optimization tune-up.

Note: Phrases refers to two to three word combinations entered into Google. Ranking refers to the number/position at which the client’s site comes up in the results.

Client 1: Site promotes consultations and products by a sports nutritionist.

1. Of three phrases for which the site was optimized, two consistently bring the site in at second and one is consistently ranked at fifteen.

2. In October 2004, this site had 635 page views. In October 2005, after optimization, the site had 11,920. That’s an increase of 1,777%!

Client 2: Site promotes books by nutrition author and speaker.

1. Of nine phrases for which the site was optimized, five consistently bring the site up in the top 10 and three are consistently in the top 5. Eight are regularly in the top 20.

2. Of the three phrases specifically emphasized by the client and webmaster throughout the site to improve ranking, two bring the site up in the top 10 and the third brings it up at 11.

3. Page views doubled (increased 3600 per month) between Oct 2004 and Oct 2005.

Client 3: Site promotes the consulting services and books of a registered dietitian.

1. Of seven phrases for which the site was optimized, two consistently bring the site up in the top 10 and one is consistently ranked second. All but one are consistently in the top 20.

2. Page views almost doubled (increased 4000 per month) between Oct 2004 and Oct 2005.

At Web noxious, we understand that the increase in page views over a year's time is multifactorial and that the search engine optimization of a web site is not the sole factor responsible for an increase. However, we can conclude that it is a significant reason for the increase when the keyword phrases rank well in the search engines.
